This idea for a Carrie White inspired session came a year ago. I read a lot last summer. I injured my back (again) towards the end last school year and couldn’t walk very well. I couldn’t shoot a lot year so I read a lot. I blew through The Walking Dead graphic novels in a matter of weeks, Lord Of the Flies, and one more that I can’t remember right now. I also rediscovered that I was in love with horror photography.
The model for this session I have used a few other times in some horror work. I like to use people that I have worked with over and over because we get a feel for each other. I know what their limits are and they know what to expect out of me. I wouldn’t dump a bucket of blood on someone I have just worked with for the first time. Well, I wouldn’t unless they asked me to. But B jumped right in with my horror work and just made it all come alive. She’s got these eyes that I can’t really explain but I know that they creep me out when she opens them wide. Writing this just reminded me that I have two other sessions that I need to blog. You will love those.
What does it take to be Carrie White?
When you think of Carrie White yes you do think of blood but I thought about the dress first. The dress had to be perfect. Every girl dreams of her prom and I wanted the dress to look like a prom dress but not be prom dress in price. I knew I was going to destroy it so I couldn’t drop more than $50. I found this amazing dress on Amazon that with some stitching became less club and more prom. Shoes weren’t super important but I am into details so we needed a nude heel. Her mom found some strappy sandals but I can’t remember where. I will update this post with the info after I ask her mom. The corsage was made by my oldest son although he doesn’t want me to tell anyone. The tiara was borrowed from a wonderful woman local to me. The pink roses came from Flowers by Candle-Lite.
Carrie White is just a poor teenage girl with a very religious mom. Her mom tries to keep her from going to the prom and when Carrie is getting ready her mom says the famous, “They’re all gonna laugh at you”. Carrie leaves to go to prom with the boyfriend of a girl that feels sorry for Carrie. But at the prom as she’s being crowned prom queen another student, Chris Hargenson with her boyfriend Billy dump a bucket of pig’s blood on Carrie. After this happens, in her mind she hears her mother’s voice and seeing all the students laughing at her starts to use her telekinetic powers to harm everyone.
For the blood for this shoot I used corn syrup and food coloring. While preparing for this session I watched a lot of behind the scenes and interviews with the actors and actresses from the movie. Sissy Spacek who played Carrie said that the production company used corn syrup and food coloring so I decided that was what I was going to use.
It pays to make friends with people in your town. I live in a smallish town and like to talk to everyone. I was talking to the owner of Foodtown, a local grocery store ( I also purchased all of the materials to make the blood from here) and asked him if I was allowed to use his parking lot for this shoot. I also asked him if he happened to know anyone that owned a classic car that was red. He did! He came down with his 71 (?) Cutlass and sat for a few photographs. You can even see him inside the car if you look close enough.
I loved shooting this session. If you liked it or hated it leave me a comment and let me know. If you loved it and want to book a horror shoot please contact me through my contact form. Talk to you soon!
