Denville Child Photographer | Black Roses

Welcome and hello from Denville child photographer, Laura Short! I hope you like what you see and share with your friends. If you do please click the contact bar and get in touch.

The winter months are usually slow for photographers.  Christmas happens and then BAM, work almost completely stops. During these months I like to revisit why I love photography, photograph my kids, and even try new things. Usually during these months if I am not shooting I am reading or watching a lot of movies. I draw a lot of inspiration from movies, paintings, books, digital art, etc. When I'm reading or watching I will jot ideas down in a notebook and revisit them later.

Black Roses happened after I listened to a podcast on galleries. I set a goal for myself this year to have enough work by my birthday to start submitting to galleries. I set a goal of 10 sessions with a theme in mind and so far I have completed two of those sessions. And I'm super proud of myself because creating pieces of work is far different than plopping a family down in a field and screaming smile.

I took a look inside myself and looked at my interests to see what I am really drawn to. I love darker photography. I love macabre and costumes and grungy surreal ideas. I've definitely started to want to shift my work into more of a fine art atmosphere. Beautiful shots of beautiful children will always be something that I love and enjoy doing so I won't stop doing that. But now I want to dig deeper and find the artist that I lost many years ago.

For this session I wanted a little bit of a somber look and this model pulled it off amazing. You might recognize her from The Crow shoot I did back in November. If not, go check it out because she was amazing. I did another session with her prior to this one and it didn't have quite what I wanted to so I went back to my notebook and came up with the idea of "black". I wanted everything to be black. And I like elements of death so I chose the black roses and the all black outfit. We shot in my outdoor studio at maybe 3 in the afternoon. There was not so much bright sun but there was enough sun that you can see in the photos. I didn't want complete flat lighting so I steered from the golden hour. Recently I have started to go to antiquing and finding old photographs is always a treat so I knew that I wanted them in that style. One thing I notice in my life and when I work is that I center subjects a lot. I have a little bit of OCD in that I want things to be balanced.

Denville Child Photographer | Wildflowers

Welcome and hello from Denville child photographer, Laura Short! I hope you like what you see and share with your friends. If you do please click the contact bar and get in touch.

It's been a weird winter. The kids are cooped up and I'm always cold so no way do I want to be outside any longer than I need to be. Walking into the grocery store or at the bus stop is my hard limit.  Some days it's 18 degrees and then the next it's 70. Just when I celebrate, the next day we are covered in snow for a few days. In fact it is supposed to snow tomorrow and it’s 54 for the high today.

Without having a dedicated studio space the winters can get a tad rough and every photographer knows that January-March is slow season.  A lot of people supplement this time selling education to other photographers, workshops, schedule some shoots during this time, or if you're like me (a kid without a dedicated space) you shoot what is in front of you.

Years ago I used to shoot a lot of lifestyle photography and birth photography. I love shooting birth photography but I haven't done any since moving to Denville last year. If you talk to me or work with me you will know I love the light. Light is what photography is all about. It is what photography is. It's light. I can photograph you any time any place as long as I can find the light.

I take a lot of inspiration from paintings and older photographs lately. If you look in my bookmarks or my saved inspiration folder on my desktop I have a lot of older photographs in there. A lot are creepy Halloween images but that's only because I like creepy stuff. My youngest spends almost all of his day in the living room. He plays video games, Legos, watches TV, and often parades in his undies in the living room. On one of the very few not gloomy days in the last two weeks I asked him to stand closer to the window and hold this flower in the photographs. He always makes silly faces. I told him he could make them during the whole session because I knew I was going to focus on the flowers instead of his face.

What is fine art?

I was asked this recently. It’s a painting of a person that is in such a way that you can display it anywhere at any time and it’s a classic piece of art. It is a good photograph that evokes an emotion or mood rather than a photograph of a person. My goal is to produce fine art photography that you can display all year round. Forget about all of those themed mini sessions that you can only display for a few days out of the year. You want beautiful art that you can be proud of and display all year long. I can give you that. Just click that contact button to get your free consultation and find out all of the details.

Contact Denville child photographer Laura Short for a no commitment consultation today. If you'd like we can meet for coffee on me at my favorite cafe.

Denville, NJ Photographer | Do you like scary movies??

Do you love scary movies as much as I do?

If you have ever talked to me for longer than three minutes you know I love horror. I love scary movies, scary TV shows, scary books, I just love being scared... You get it. The first scary movie I can remember seeing was Nightmare on Elm St. Freddy Krueger had such an impact on me as a young five year old. What were my parents thinking?! I don't know but I blame it on them how weird I am now.

Over the summer time I made a comment on Facebook about a scary movie or something related. I do not even remember what it was but a friend's husband commented back that all I needed was Jason, Michael, and Pinhead and then I would have the gang. In the following immediate second an idea popped in my head and I spent the next three months trying my hardest to put it together. Thank you so much Jason for planting the idea.

Being a semi new photographer in Denville I only knew a few other kids in the age range I wanted to use. My son's friend was not interested at all and I only had one male tween rep. I made a comment to my friend and then BAM, it happened. I want to say thank you to Carmen for reaching out to the parents of all of the kids who participated. I wouldn't have been able to pull it off if it weren't for her. And thank you to the boys who dressed up in hot costumes and braved an unusually warm day in October.

I wanted icons from the 80's and 90's horror films. I chose about 10 different films that I really enjoyed as a kid and still as an adult today. I wasn't able to get them all but what we did get I really loved. I'm going to do a blog for each of the kids but here's "The Gang".

Horror villains from the 80s and 90s.

Left to right: The Wolfman, Chucky, Freddy Krueger, Scary Clown, Michael Myers, Damien, Jason Voorhees, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

In the next few months I will be planning another shoot similar but will focus on icons from 2000-2010. If you have a child between the ages of 6-15 and they take direction well and are not afraid of dress up contact me for a session. I would love to work with you.

Do you have a favorite scary movie? Leave a comment and let me know what it is. <3

Denville, NJ Teen Photographer | The Dancer

Recently I decided to take a break from maternity and newborn photography and focus more on artistic work. Maternity and newborn photography can be artistic but I like a minimalist approach to it. I like to keep it clean and neutral colors and really timeless. Years ago the giant flowers on baby's heads were popular as were those crochet or knit animal props. I also have a back injury from the military that has really limited what I am able to do with newborn sessions. If you've ever had one done you know they can be loooooong and all of the bending and twisting to get the interesting angles is just too much for my back lately. So with doctor's orders I have officially put maternity and newborn photography on hold and have moved on to being a Baltimore teen photographer. Sometimes it is difficult to have an artist's mind. It's always going. I can't sit still for long enough and I want to always be creating something. I want to photograph something. Over the summer I decided I wanted to photograph a dancer. It took me awhile to find one. They are pretty busy I learned! We didn't incorporate her dance experience in this session enough. I admit when I went into this session I was not sure what I was going to do. I had a few dresses, some flowers, and a tiny bit of an idea that I wanted to at least photograph her against some leaves. There's this beautiful wall of leaves in the area I shoot in and I've never quite had the right person to shoot there.

I grew up with this little lady's mom. We knew each other in middle school and high school. And I adore her mother so I knew that I would enjoy working with both of them. I bought this dress at a second hand store and it was just fantastic. I made the tulle skirt over the course of a few weeks and it was too big for her! This girl had the most amazing connection with me. We worked for probably an hour before I lost too much light and we became mosquito dinner. There were so many amazing photos from this session. Enjoy!
