Denville, NJ Photographer | Jason Voorhees, Friday the 13th

Jason Voorhees in a neighborhood

Jason Voorhees is just scary! I mean think about it.. He’s a giant, he doesn’t speak, he wears a mask, and he wants to KILL. YOU. DEAD. And I grew up watching him. I don’t remember which movie I watched first but I know I have marathoned them at least twice in my life. In case you live under a rock, wait, everyone knows who Jason is but if you don’t let me tell you a little about him.

Jason Voorhees

Jason is the son of a Pamela Voorhees, a camp cook at Camp Crystal Lake. He was born deformed and this left him vulnerable to bullies.  He died by drowning at the lake after trying to prove to bullies that he could swim.  Jason comes back in Friday the 13th Part 2 and is all grown up and killing everyone. Jason kills to keep the camp from being reopened and to avenge his mom as seen in flashbacks.  In each new movie Jason is almost unstoppable and while he “dies” he is resurrected to continue his killing. There’s even a Freddy vs Jason for all those diehard fans of both killers.

In case you’ve never seen Friday the 13th and want to catch it, the best summary of the movie is from Josec_2001 on IMDB..

“In 1957, at Camp Crystal Lake, a young boy named Jason Voorhees drowned. In 1958, two camp counselors were murdered. In 1962, fires and bad water thwarted the camp's reopening. Now, in 1979, Steve Christy finally reopens Camp Crystal Lake with the help of a few new counselors. Ignoring the warnings from a crazy old man, the murders start once again while a mysterious stalker prowls the area. Is it revenge that the killer is looking for? Who will survive the nightmare and live to tell the story?”

SPOLER ALERT!!! It’s Jason’s mom. You can read the full synopsis here.

Children’s Horror

“Photograph what you love”. I’m not sure where I first read that but I really believe in it. I simply love horror. I will take a good slasher flick over a boring RomCom any day of the week. Over the weekend everyone was running out to see the new Fifty Shades movie and I was seeing the new Resident Evil.

When the idea came to me to start shooting more horror I knew I had to have a Jason session. I know kids can be grossed out or scared of blood so I knew that doing this had to be pretty clean. And being that this would be the first time I would meet Kyle and his mom I didn’t want to freak them out too much. I also live in a pretty square town so I have to tread lightly. I did learn at the end that he is very interested in going more gore and blood so when we revisit this shoot in the spring/summer there will be a bit more gore. And what about the lake scenes. I wanted to do photos of Jason coming out of the lake or going after people in a canoe in the lake but with this being the day before Halloween it just wasn’t possible. That was my whole vision for this session. It was impossible to do a group session and then individual sessions on the same day so we just shot the group session at the Ayres/Knuth Farm Foundation and then some of Jason at his house.

I hope you enjoy my tamed down version of Jason Voorhees and will check back in a few months when the weather is warmer and I can get him in the lake. Enjoy! Leave me some comments below to let me and Kyle know how he did.

P.S If you love Jason and want to follow a really awesome cosplayer on Instagram follow this guy @Travisjason13. He's really great.  He posts tons of photos of his costumes and other cosplayers. I'm super jealous of the photos with Kane Hodder and so many artists in the horror genre.

Horror not your think? I photograph regular child sessions too. Please contact me if you are interested in a Morris County Photography session.
